Raising standards in Massachusetts is a group effort
As Massachusetts high school students who failed the MCAS gear up for re-tests, schools must "get smarter" about developing ways to help them pass, quote the Globe in a recent editorial. Educators should teach beyond the test, not only by arming students with lessons in English and math, but also analyzing test question patterns, identifying curricular weaknesses and sharing teaching methods that work. Bay State education leaders must also publicize the most effective practices. West Roxbury High School has followed the Globe's prescription with success, raising its MCAS achievement dramatically.
