March 25: AEI Common Core Event
March 21, 2013While most discussion about the Common Core State Standards Initiative has focused on its technical merits, its ability to facilitate innovation, or the challenges facing its practical implementation, there has been little talk of how the standards fit in the larger reform ecosystem. At this AEI conference, a set of distinguished panelists will present the results of their research and thoughts on this topic and provide actionable responses to the questions that will mark the next phase of Common Core implementation efforts. The event will take place at the American Enterprise Institute in D.C. on March 25, 2013, from 9:00AM to 5:00PM. It will also be live-streamed online. For more information and to register, click here.
March 22: CAP Governance Event
March 21, 2013Over the last twenty years, flagging achievement and disjointed education governance have led policymakers to explore alternative ways of organizing schools, like mayoral control, and to rethink district organization and the role of school boards and districts. The debates around these issues are emblematic of the larger questions of education governance: Is the system we have today well suited for the twenty-first century? Are there alternative approaches that would move us closer to building a high-quality school system for all children? Join us for a panel discussion in D.C. on March 22, 2013 from 9:30AM to 11:00AM. The event will be live-streamed online. To find out more and to register, click here.
What so proudly we hail: Civics curriculum
March 21, 2013How can we produce citizens who are attached to our country, devoted to its ideals, and eager to live an active civic life? Studying our documents and learning our history can surely help. But stories are even better. With "What So Proudly We Hail," educators Amy A. Kass and Leon R. Kass demonstrate how story, speech, and song can be used to enhance civics education and how a pedagogical approach that stresses learning through inquiry can make primary sources come alive for students of all ages.
