Today on Forbes.com, Checker explains why he finds reforms in LA, NY and Denver promising instances of thinking outside the box. It’s all about the numbers—of the test score and dollar variety. When the old ways aren’t working, shouldn’t we try something new? Absolutely.

Be nice if there was some historical figure who stood astride the public education system like the Colossus of Rhodes, pointing the way toward educational excellence by the example of their own magnificent accomplishments.
That way these various, hopeful attempts to push the public education system off it’s weighty base of least common denominator governance might have a beaten path to follow and we’d have some reason to hope they were headed in the right direction.
Alas, no one’s ever turned a large, urban school district into the shining, educational city on the hill. Would it be time yet to entertain the notion that it can’t be done or is that idea still evidence of mental illness?
