My comment is that the discussion on PreK needing to prepare kids for K-3 curriculum lacked enough specifics. There are university-based and government funded programs that have explicit literacy curriculums that have been operating for a few years with sound results. Why don’t we discuss if letter naming, letter-sound correspondence, etc.should be part of Pre-K programs with appropriate assessments. Cneckers focusing on “cognitive skills” is too vague and hard to measure. It would obviate the discussion about whether middle-class kids need a direction instruction approach in PreK and would clearly help determine what percentage of all kids need a more intensive literacy focused curricculum. We know more today about what works to enhance literacy, and it should be part of the discussion on PreK reform and expansion.
