That's the message South Carolina is sending to undocumented students now that it's become the first state in the nation to bar illegal immigrants from attending its public colleges and ...   More

If we accept that there are only a finite number of slots in the colleges and universities, I fail to see how it really hurts us.

You can't tell me the numbers of illegal?s attending colleges are high enough to seriously reduce the overall quality of students. There are plenty of legal immigrants to select from.

For every illegal student who doesn't go, now one more citizen or legal immigrant will go.

You would also have to assume that the chances of the citizen and legal immigrant staying in the country are probably a lot higher as well.

I do support the DREAM initiative though that would allow illegal immigrants to serve in the military to gain citizenship.

It seems to me that this service requirement is only fair.

I am so glad that this issue is getting the attention of the education community. Sometimes the goal of ensuring that our nation is among the most well educated compels us to look at solutions outside the schoolhouse door. Reforming immigration policy (through the DREAM Act, for example) cannot be ignored if we hope to remain competitive in the 21st century. South Carolina has undoubtedly taken us a step back.
